Calibration Procedure

This procedure explains how to verify the MT-90 Hardness Checker according to ASTM E-18 parameters. This procedure should be performed daily.

PROCEDURE:
  1. In order to perform this procedure, you will need the thick Platform Spacer and the HRC51 Test Block.
  2. Go to the MT-90 Production Microhardness Tester and bring up the Main Menu. The Main Menu can be accessed by pushing the EXIT button on the currently displayed screen.
  3. Place the Mounted Part on the specimen mount and then turn the Clamping Ring until the Positioning Brackets just touch the Mounted Part. Make sure that the Mounted Part can be moved, so it can be adjusted later in the procedure.
  4. Turn on the Scope Lamp by moving the POWER switch to the ON position.
  5. From the MT-90 Main Menu, click on the RUN button to display the first “Traverse Run Mode” screen.
  6. Click on AVerify - Daily Verification to highlight the selection.
  7. Click on the RUN button to display the AVerify - Enter Information Screen.
  8. Position the cursor inside the CHECKED BY box and enter in your initials.
  9. Position the cursor inside the SAMPLE DATE box and enter in the current date.
  10. Click on the F1 OK button (or push F1 key on keyboard).
  11. Click on the YES button (or press the Y key on the keyboard) in the dialog box. This will display the scope view of the Test Block.
  12. Zoom out as far as possible using the scope zoom control.
  13. Locate clear spot on test block to run the verification.
  14. Zoom in on the test area using the scope zoom control so that only the test area is displayed.
  15. Then, click on the F1 OK button located at the bottom of the screen (or press the F1 key on the keyboard) to display the “Test Run Direction Selection” screen.
  16. Click-hold-drag the PC mouse, to rotate the guide to the degree setting you want the Test Probe to track towards and the release the mouse button to select the desired angle and then click on the F1 OK button located at the bottom of the screen.

    Be sure to set a track run angle that will not allow the Test Probe to track through any previous test indentations.
  17. The machine will make 4 test hits automatically and then return to home position.
  18. The “Running Test” screen is displayed and as measurements are automatically made, the results are displayed. When the test is complete, the “Show image with origins of traverses?” dialog box is displayed.
  19. If the results were OK, click on the NO button. If the results were not OK, click on the YES button to verify the test was taken in the desired location.
  20. When done, push the DONE button. The "Report Generate report?" dialog box is displayed.
  21. Click on the YES button to generate the Test Run Report.
  22. Click on the PRINT button to print the report.
  23. Once the report has printed, click on the DONE button. The "Graph Results - Display Graph?" dialog box is displayed.
  24. Click on the NO button. The "Save the data?" dialog box is displayed.
  25. Click on the YES button to download the data to the DataView PC. The "Traverse Run - Another Run?" dialog box is displayed.
  26. Click on the NO button. The first "Traverse Run Mode" screen is displayed.
  27. Click on the EXIT button to return to the MT-90 Main Menu.

    Do not leave the MT-90 Production Microhardness Tester powered up unless in “Main Menu”. Power to table motors is on in other screens. They could overheat.
  28. Review printed report. If all four tests are within 50.8 +/- 1.0 HRC, the verification is complete and the report can be filed in appropriate ML log in lab.

    If the tests do not meet the requirements, clean off the Test Block and repeat the verification procedure. If second attempt is unsuccessful, perform the calibration procedure.
