This procedure explains how to visually inspect and adjust Atmosphere Pilots. As contamination in Plant Air gets into the Air Intake System it starts to build up in and plug pilot orifices. As this occurs they will no longer burn properly or at all. They can be adjusted to keep them burning correctly until they are cleaned or replaced.

Always wear heat resistant gloves, suits and face protection in accordance with plant safety regulations for Heat Treat when working near or on any equipment in Heat Treat or serious injury could occur.

It is critically important that all door and vestibule stack atmosphere pilots are burning and positioned properly. This is to ensure that any atmosphere gas escaping from the furnace is immediately ignited and not allowed to accumulate outside the furnace.

PROCEDURE:
  1. If a Pilot is not lit, first light a Hand Torch and then place the Torch flame by the Pilot to light it.
  2. If it will not light, turn the needle valve all the way clockwise to close the gas.
  3. Then, turn the gas needle valve 7 turns counter-clockwise.
  4. Put a lit hand torch near the pilot burner and open the pilot gas valve.
  5. The pilot should light with a rich yellow lazy flame.
  6. Slowly adjust the gas needle valve clockwise until you have a strong sharp flame that cannot be blown out.
  7. If you cannot get a strong sharp flame, check the air and gas lines and the mixer for dirt.
