This procedure explains how to check the operation of the non-ferrous metal detector in the Homogenizer. This procedure must be performed each shift.
If the Homogenizer is running, the procedure can be performed between batches.
PROCEDURE:
Retrieve the three test balls from the storage cabinet. The balls are made of:
Iron
Brass
Stainless Steel
Walk around to the back of the Homogenizer and empty the diverter waste bucket. When returned, make sure it is centered under the diverter pipe.
Locate the catch gates at the back of the Homogenizer. During normal production, the green production catch gate will be lined up under the inlet pipe.
Remove the alignment pin from the back of the catch gates.
The green catch gate and red catch gate are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.
The red catch gate can only be used to stop test balls. The screen material is not strong enough to withstand constant material flow from the Homogenizer.
The green catch gate can only be used during normal Homogenizer production. The screen web cross section is too large to stop the test balls.
Verify that the red LED on the position switch is lit. This ensures that the red test ball catch gate is in position.
The test can not be performed unless the red LED is lit.
Go up to the 4th floor and drop the first test ball into the test ball entry tube located near the metal detector.
Push the green DROP TEST BALL pushbutton near the test ball entry tube, which sends the test ball down to the 2nd floor.
Push the green DROP TEST BALL pushbutton near the test ball entry tube, which sends the test ball down to the 2nd floor.
Go back down to the 2nd floor and move the green production catch gate so that it is properly lined up under the inlet pipe.
Insert the alignment pin into the back of the catch gates.
Return the test balls to the proper storage location.
If all three balls were diverted to the diverter waste bucket, mark them as PASSED on the log sheet.
If any of the the three balls were diverted to the red test ball catch gate or did not drop out, then mark them as FAILED on the log sheet. Inform the Maintenance Department if any of the balls FAILED.
